Here are the end-of-trimester extra credit opportunities that are available to all students. You may do none, some, or all of the projects for 10 points extra credit each.
Trimester 1 - Extra Credit Opportunities (Due by 11/11)
Math in the News: Find 2 current events articles that have to do with something math related. Bring in the articles and write a half page summary about each that includes how math is incorporated within it.
Interview: Conduct an interview with someone who uses math in their job. Come up with at least 5 questions to ask them. Write the questions and responses on a sheet of paper to turn in.
Movie Math: Watch a movie that involves math. Write a one page summary of the movie and how math is involved.
Collage: Create a math collage using pictures, magazine/newspaper clippings, etc.
Trimester 2 - Extra Credit Opportunities (Due by 2/17)
Music Math: Create a song about a topic we learned this year. Write the lyrics on paper and then sing the song for me or for the class.
History of Math: Research the math of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, Romans, Islamists, Babylonians, or Indians. Write a one-page summary on what they discovered and how they used math in their daily lives. Include famous mathematicians of that civilization.
Comic Strip: Make a comic strip that describes something we have learned so far this year in math. It must contain at least 5 panels (boxes).
Shopping Spree: Go to a store and find out what the sales tax percentage is. Then, find 5 items, write down their sale price, and calculate what the tax would be for each item. Find what the total of your bill would be.
Trimester 3 - Extra Credit Opportunities (Due by 5/26)
Crossword Puzzle: Create a crossword puzzle with at least 20 clues. The clues should be definitions of vocabulary words we’ve learned this year.
How-To: Create a “how-to” book, pamphlet, poster, etc. that would help a student understand a topic that we learned this year. For example, “How to Solve Two-Step Equations.”
Mobile: Create a mobile that describes something we learned this year in math. For example, you can create a Percent Mobile that explains how to change from percents to decimals and fractions.
Abacus: Research what an abacus is and make one. Include a brief description of how it is used and from where it originated.
